Established over 100 years ago, Bergman Companies Inc. has grown into a leader in pavement maintenance throughout the Midwest.
The company was originally founded as C. H. Bergman Company in 1889 and for years served Eau Claire and the surrounding communities as a supplier of coal, ice, lumber, and later fuel oil. The company continued in the fuel oil business until it was sold in 1993.
In the early 1960's, the Bergmans began to look for a summer business to keep their winter employees working. In 1963, they established Bergman Blacktop, Inc. This full-service paving company had its own hot mix plant, pavers, graders, and fleet of trucks. It soon grew to far surpass the size of Bergman Fuel Co., Inc. Although mainly a paving business in the early years, the company quickly realized the need for pavement maintenance.
In 1986 the company name was changed to Bergman Companies, Inc., with the slogan pavement maintenance systems, to reflect the expansion into pavement maintenance. By 1992 the company had outgrown the original office and yard near downtown Eau Claire and a new complex was built on 12 acres adjacent to I94 on Eau Claire's west side. There they built a 10,000 sq. ft. office/shop complex. In 2001 continued growth required an office expansion that brought the building up to 13,000 sq. ft. Additional sales offices and yards were opened in 2002 in Melrose, WI and in 2003 in Frederic, WI.
Bergman Companies now devotes all of its time to asphalt maintenance and no longer has paving capabilities. When the company acts as a general contractor on a project including paving it subcontracts that portion of the work. Pavement maintenance techniques are constantly changing, but with its many years of experience and state-of-the-art equipment, Bergman Companies is now recognized as a leader in the field of pavement maintenance throughout the Midwest.
